How to use a Kaoss Pad 3 as a MIDI controller
Here’s a quick and dirty tutorial on how to use the Kaoss Pad 3 as a MIDI controller. If you have any ideas on how to expand it, drop me an e-mail at tim at heftyoutput dot com.
The Kaoss Pad 3 sends the following MIDI events:
| Touch Pad X-axis | CC #12 |
| Touch Pad Y-axis | CC #13 |
| Touch Pad on/off | CC #92 |
| LEVEL Slider | CC #93 |
| FX DEPTH knob | CC #94 |
| Hold button | CC #95 |
| Sample Bank A button | C1 |
| Sample Bank B button | C#1 |
| Sample Bank C button | D1 |
| Sample Bank D button | D#1 |
One thing to note is that the Sample buttons don’t send MIDI until there’s a sample in that particular bank. It didn’t take me long to figure out, but I thought I’d mention it to save anyone headache.
Using Logic’s Environment, you can easily turn the CC #92 messages generated by touch on/off into a far more useful note on/off. The following example gives us a C1 note on touch - if you want a different note, select a different note in step 3 and 4.
#1 Open the Environment and select “Click & Ports” from the dropdown menu in the top left

#2 Create two new Transformers and wire them like so

#3 Open the first Transformer and mirror the following settings

#4 Open the second Transformer and mirror the following settings
