Our breaks project, which we’ve decided to break off under the name “Meat Axe“, has a track coming out on the new Zenon compilation, Permutations Vol. 2. Needless to say, we’re stoked. Samples are here.

The original Permutations released on Zenon in 2004 is considered a seminal release in the minimal-progressive genre. Permutations Vol.2 retains the concept of the original, yet takes it even further. This is made possible by technological advances and the dedication of the Zenon crew to push their own musical boundaries. With a host of newcomers aboard plus all the Zenon stalwarts, this album contains 10 tracks of fresh, technical progressive that you don’t want to miss!

Release date: 05/06/2009

1.	Grouch – Mayan Toolkit
2.	Shadow Fx – Minimal Technician
3.	One Tasty Morsel – Get Your Wide On
4.	Psypox – Boon Moots
5.	Autonomech – Bit Generation
6.	Sensient – Chambers
7.	Sensient – Madmans Playroom (Tetrameth Remix)
8.	Tristan Boyle – Into My Spiral Arms
9.	Meat Axe – Two Whiffs and Your Greedy
10.	Vacuum Stalkers - Ironman

Here’s a quick and dirty tutorial on how to use the Kaoss Pad 3 as a MIDI controller. If you have any ideas on how to expand it, drop me an e-mail at tim at heftyoutput dot com.

The Kaoss Pad 3 sends the following MIDI events:

Touch Pad X-axis

CC #12

Touch Pad Y-axis

CC #13

Touch Pad on/off

CC #92

LEVEL Slider

CC #93

FX DEPTH knob

CC #94

Hold button

CC #95

Sample Bank A button

C1

Sample Bank B button

C#1

Sample Bank C button

D1

Sample Bank D button

D#1

One thing to note is that the Sample buttons don’t send MIDI until there’s a sample in that particular bank. It didn’t take me long to figure out, but I thought I’d mention it to save anyone headache.

Using Logic’s Environment, you can easily turn the CC #92 messages generated by touch on/off into a far more useful note on/off. The following example gives us a C1 note on touch - if you want a different note, select a different note in step 3 and 4.

#1 Open the Environment and select “Click & Ports” from the dropdown menu in the top left

#2 Create two new Transformers and wire them like so

#3 Open the first Transformer and mirror the following settings

#4 Open the second Transformer and mirror the following settings

I know we’ve been saying this for about four years, but we are honestly working on that (psytrance) album. We’ve been pretty side-tracked with the breakbeat stuff for a while now, but we have eight psy tracks chosen that are dancefloor-tested and almost complete - and last week I started the incredibly painful and time consuming process of moving the projects from Logic 5.5.1 on my old PC to Logic 8.0.2 on my MacBook Pro for a final polish and mixdown.
